Background
Financed emissions—the greenhouse gas emissions generated as a result of financial services, investments, and lending by financial institutions—are challenging to measure. This complexity often leads to underreporting or misreporting. As a significant component of Scope 3 emissions for financial institutions, reducing financed emissions is critical for achieving net-zero goals. To address this challenge, adopting standardized carbon accounting frameworks, such as the Partnership for Carbon Accounting Financials (PCAF), can provide valuable guidance.
To advance understanding and practices in this area, Working Group 2 (WG2) of the GIP, focusing on sustainability disclosure and co-hosted by HSBC and Crédit Agricole CIB, with support from Ernst & Young, is organizing a webinar on financed emission accounting. The session will feature experts from PCAF, Chinese and global banking institutions, and professional service or data providers. Discussions will cover a range of topics, including the latest PCAF methodologies, Chinese guidelines for financed emissions accounting, practical applications by banking institutions, and the challenges and solutions surrounding this critical issue.
